Blood sugar test result

Blood sugar level - fasting (nothing eaten or drunk except water for eight hours beforehand):

• Below 6.1 mmol/l - no diabetes
• Between 6.1 and 6.9 mmol/l - pre-diabetes
• Above 6.9 mmol/l - diabetes

Blood sugar level - non-fasting (about one and a half to two hours after a meal, when there is the most blood sugar in the blood):

• Below 7.8 mmol/l - no diabetes
• Between 7.8 and 11 mmol/l - pre-diabetes
• Above 11 mmol/l - diabetes

Many meters have a small measurement deviation. The numbers after the decimal point may therefore actually be slightly lower or higher.

Measuring blood sugar with a finger prick

Whether someone has diabetes can only be clearly determined by a blood test. This is often done with a finger prick. In a drop of blood, the blood sugar (blood glucose) level at that moment is measured.

Laboratory blood test

Often, the blood is tested in a laboratory as an additional check. The results may differ because blood sugar measured at the fingertip is different from blood sugar measured in a larger blood vessel. Nowadays, the blood sugar meter automatically converts the value from a finger prick to a laboratory result.

What exactly is blood sugar or blood glucose?

The body obtains blood sugar mainly from food. Carbohydrates you eat, such as those in bread, sugar, and potatoes, enter the blood as glucose. This blood glucose (blood sugar) travels through the entire body and provides energy to all cells. Blood sugar is vital: you cannot live without it. Normally, the body keeps the blood sugar level precisely balanced: not too much and not too little. With diabetes, this balance is lost and treatment is needed to lower the blood sugar.
