The No. 12 is a small, pointed, crescent-shaped blade that is sharpened along the inside edge of the curve. It is sometimes used as a suture cutter, but also for arteriotomies (surgical incision of an artery), parotid surgery (salivary glands in the face), mucosal cuts on septoplasty (repair of nasal septum) and during cleft palate procedures, ureterolithotomy (removal of tartar by incision) of the ureter) and pyelolithotomy (surgical incision of the renal pelvis of a kidney to remove a kidney stone - also known as a pelviolithotomy). They are also used within dental procedures for raising skin flaps and for removing excess polymerized composite resin on the face and interproximal region of the tooth during restoration procedures.

The way a surgical blade is handled before use can determine how effectively it performs during use. There are a number of ways in which the cutting edge of a knife can be damaged after it has been removed from its protective foil package.
When removing a knife from its protective package, make sure it is not placed in a metal bowl or container is dropped as this may reduce the initial sharpness of the cutting edge even before it is attached to the handle. If you need to use pliers or a needle holder to remove the blade from its protective packaging, be careful not to grab the blade over the cutting edge.
