The No.11 is an elongated triangular blade sharpened along the hypotenuse with a strong pointed tip, making it ideal for stab incisions needed when puncturing an abscess or inserting a chest drain. It is held like a pencil and often upside down by the surgeon to avoid accidentally inserting it too deeply. To avoid this scenario, the scalpel should not be held against the back, while the heel of the hand should be placed on the skin, stabilizing the hand to help prevent an unwanted deep incision.
The No.11 is also used for other small incisions, for example when inserting a laparoscopic port, vein and artery central lines, opening the aorta and removing calcifications in the aortic or mitral valve, anatomical dissections and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower extremities in podiatry. The way a surgical blade is handled before use can determine how effectively it performs during use. There are a number of ways in which the cutting edge of a knife can be damaged after it has been removed from its protective foil package.
When removing a knife from its protective package, make sure it is not placed in a metal bowl or container is dropped as this may reduce the initial sharpness of the cutting edge even before it is attached to the handle. If you need to use pliers or a needle holder to remove the blade from its protective packaging, be careful not to grab the blade over the cutting edge.
